Altruism is a way of life
The old saying “it's better to give than to receive” is very accurate and something we should all strive towards. We shouldn’t help to gain something from it (quid pro quo), to boost our public image, or because it just feels good. We need to help because its the right thing to do most importantly - putting someone else’s needs before ours for a greater good.
Often times, I’m in deep compelling thought on "HOW CAN I HELP” because it’s what I want to truly do. For instance, I meet and have met SO many inspiring, deserving, intelligent human beings who can do so much more in life, there’s just something in my gut that tells me this. I’ll hear out there stories and question their goals in life, or what they’d rather and truly be doing and I can’t help but wonder, “why aren’t you doing or pursuing that!?”. I find myself walking away just in this cloud of thought of I wish there’s something I can do to help this person achieve their version of greatness. I wish I had millions of dollars in the bank to help guide them to where they should be headed, or fund that start-up idea, or be that person with the right connections to set someone up on an opportunity. I mean hell, I walk around work and see so much wasted potential, I talk to individuals who had goals or dreams of doing something else, but they’re either too comfortable or scared to pursue it; I WANT to be that person that mentors and pushes them to achieve their greatness because it is possible.
We just have to look at it on a small term scale, for now. So, we don’t have the millions or the influential connections in our contacts to set someone who we feel is deserving up, but we can do what we can. We can offer our unconditional encouragement which most of the time is all someone else needs to get going. Being there when time gets tough, answering their late night phone calls of anxiety, truly caring and empathizing with them, this helps. Besides this scale, help because you can; if you see someone struggling on something, pushing a downed car, an old lady crossing the street, you get the idea. . . just help!
Help without the benefits in mind of what could happen if you did it. The benefits will come because if you put good energy into the world, the world will reap you with the benefits in some form of way. There’s a really insightful book I’m rereading currently called “Give and Take” by Adam Grant and he says there are three types of people in the world: Givers, Takers, and Matchers. Strive to be a giver, strive to be altruistic without even thinking about it, let it become engraved into the subconscious mind.
I don’t know, maybe you’re like me and just trying to find your way to help the world. Leaving your good indent on the world is what matters to me, for one because I truly enjoy it. I think that’s why I started this blog, and currently, have a few more projects brainstormed once I obtain funding and the right knowledge to launch these ideas. Do what you can and find your way of helping.
